Brutally murdered veteran journalist malik ismail’s first death anniversary on 01 November, held in “daurdad” (attock). Family members appeal for justice.

Malik Mohammad Ismail Khan, brutally murdered veteran journalist’s first death anniversary will be observed at his native village Daurdad, (Sanjwal-Bahter Road) Tehsil and District Attock, on Thursday 01 November 2007.

Recitation of the Holy Quran and Fateh prayer will be held for the departed soul of Shaheed Mohammad Ismail Khan. Deceased Senior journalist’s sons Rizwan Ismail Khan, Zishan Ismail Khan and brothers Malik Mohammad Khateeb Khan, Hafiz Abdul Hameed Khan (District Correspondent Daily “Ausaf”), Abdul Rasheed Khan and Abdul Waheed Khan have requested for relatives and friends of Malik Ismail to participate on this occasion and remember him in their duas.

Malik Ismail was in journalism for the last thirty years and he was working as a Resident Editor of an independent national news agency Pakistan Press International (PPI) Islamabad, at the time of his brutal murder under mysterious circumstances by unidentified people on midnight of 31st October/01st November 2006.

He had no enmity or personal conflict with any one. During his career he worked with prominent media organisations including Daily “The Muslim”, Daily “The Frontier Post”, Daily “The Mashriq” News agencies “Online” and “PPI”.

He started his career in journalism as a Reporter from Attock in 1976, and worked his way up to Peshawar and Islamabad as a Senior Staff Reporter, Chief Reporter, Columnists, Editor Reporting, Bureau Chief and Resident Editor till his sudden blow, which has devastated his whole family and shocked the journalist community.

He was an honest, upright, fearless and a conscientious journalist and was widely admired and respected in the community of journalists for his qualities of character and professionalism. He always worked for the positive image of independent journalism in Pakistan.

At the noisy protest by the journalist community, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Aziz, and Federal Interior Minister Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, has been ordered two separate inquiries for a full investigation, but nothing has come from any inquiry or interrogations.

The family members express their grief and sorrow at the fact that the murderers have not been caught and said that Malik Ismail who was such a very kind, humble and caring person will never come back to us but, that justice should be done.

They have demanded to the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary to take “Sou Moto Action” of the clueless investigation into the brutal murder of a senior journalist even after a whole year, to provide them justice and bringing the actual culprits for exemplary punishment.

I would like to draw the attention of the authorities, especially the Honourable Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan, to a serious issue. One year ago, my elder brother Mohammad Ismail Khan, a veteran journalist, was brutally murdered in Islamabad under mysterious circumstances. The police are still clueless and there is no headway in the investigation. Ismail was working as a journalist for the last 30 years. He was working as the Resident Editor of the Pakistan Press International (PPI), a news agency, in Islamabad at the time of his murder by unidentified people at midnight of October 31/November 1, 2006. Almost a whole year has passed, yet there is no headway in the investigations to find the murderers. I appeal through your widely-circulated and recognised newspaper to the CJ to take suo motu notice of the brutal murder of Ismail Khan and provide justice to our family.

"Appeal for Justice" Published in Daily Dawn "Letter to Editor" on 17th October, 2007.

Honourable Chief Justice
Abdul Waheed Khan Birmingham, UK awkhan_24@hotmail.co.uk
I am a Pakistani and now living in the "United Kingdom" for the last few years. I would like to draw attention to the authorities, especially the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan, that one-year ago my elder brother Malik Mohammad Ismail Khan, a veteran journalist was brutally murdered in Islamabad the federal capital of Pakistan under mysterious circumstances. The police are still clueless and there is no headway in the whole investigation. My fifty three year old elder brother Malik Ismail Khan Shaheed was in journalism for the last thirty years and he was working as a Resident Editor of an independent national news agency Pakistan Press International (PPI) at Islamabad, at the time of his brutal murder by unidentified people on the midnight of 31st October/01st November 2006. He had no enmity or personal conflict with any one. During his career he worked with prominent media organisations including Daily "The Muslim", daily "The Frontier Post", News agencies "Online" and "PPI". He started his career in journalism as a Reporter from Attock in 1976, and worked his way up to Peshawar and Islamabad as a Senior Staff Reporter, Chief Reporter, Editor Reporting, Bureau Chief and Resident Editor till his sudden blow, which has devastated our whole family. He was an honest, upright, fearless and a conscientious journalist and was widely admired and respected in the community of journalists for his qualities of character and professionalism. He was a much loved and respected, son, brother, uncle, husband, father and grand father, he will be dearly missed and our family will not be able to come to terms with how he died until his killers are found and punished. According to the Police his body was found from the green belt area of F-6/1 (which is some thirty/forty feet away from Shaheed-e-Millets Road not so far away from his office "PPI") near a busy Super Market, as an unknown person, in the morning on Wednesday 01st November 2006 and was moved straight away to the "PIMS" (Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences) for autopsy, without any detailed forensic search of the scene. Whilst his identity cards and other possessions were in his waistcoat, which was found by the police later on in the day, and then they told "PPI" office and our family members in the afternoon. The murderers took only his mobile phone, which is still missing and many phone calls made and received by him are not listed in the incoming and outgoing details. Doctor Wasim A Khawaja of "PIMS" who did the autopsy stated that "it was a target killing and there were very clear marks on both of his wrists". There were also very clear finger print marks on his face near his mouth, showing that he had been gagged, and there was a (bruise) little round mark on the left side of his chest above the heart. The Doctor said that he had been killed after being tied up and abducted because there were no signs of resistance on his hands etc. Kohsar Police Station in Islamabad registered an FIR No.466 dated 01.11.2006 under section 302/34 PP against unknown assailants on the complaint of his son and started the investigation but even after the passing of one year, the capital's police have no clue and headway. Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) also done an investigation but nothing has come from their investigation too. Even though the Ministers and Government Officials have claimed that the actual culprits will be caught very soon, and after the noisy protest of the journalist community, Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr Shaukat Aziz, and Federal Interior Minister Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan, have been ordered two separate inquiries for a full investigation, and under the chair of Federal Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah, a joint interrogation team was set up but nothing has come from any inquiry or interrogations. The fact of the matter is that, after a year of the brutal murder of a senior journalist who was such a very kind, humble and caring person, there is no headway or any clue as to finding the actual murderers because the investigative departments have not done their work properly. They have ruined the whole investigation. We appeal through your newspaper to the Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take "Sou Moto Action" into the brutal murder of a senior journalist and provide justice to our family in finding the actual murderers and bringing them to exemplary punishment. I request and hope that you will publish my Appeal for Justice in your earliest publication.

Malik Ismail's murder still a mystery

Malik Ismail's murder still a mystery

Kaswar Klasra

ISLAMABAD: The federal capital police can not solve the mystery of Malik Ismail's murder, a senior journalist who was brutally killed by some unidentified people nine months ago.

The instigators say that there was no immediate information about the culprits and the motive behind the murder which has shocked the journalist community already concerned about increasing intimidation to the journalists.

After brief analysis of the federal capital police's performance, one can easily assume that their only purpose is to solve high profile murder cases and they were not willing to spare time to tackle cases which fall within the category of low profile cases.

Failure of the police in solving the mysterious murder of Malik Ismail has exposed inactiveness of investigation wing of federal capital police.

It is fact that crime ratio in Islamabad is comparatively low as compared to rest of the cities but it is also fact that a number of murder cases are still to be solved that are pending with investigation department since months.

After analysing the record of 'investigation department' of capital police , it may be assumed that federal capital police takes interest in solving high profile case only but it did not bother to solve murder cases in which deceased belong to low class.

Let take example of renowned businessman Ikramullah Khan Khatak who was murdered in Gujranwala by a gang led by a young woman after ensnaring him from Islamabad. It was a blind murder but big bosses of the capital police leave no stone unturned in solving the mystery as the deceased, despite being a renowned businessman, was also brother of an MPA of NWFP assembly having close family relationships with Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao.

It was an endeavour on part of the capital police when the personnel engaged in investigating the case, made a major breakthrough and arrested the Islamabad-based young woman for her alleged involvement in the heinous crime. Solving blind murder of Ikramullah Khatak showed the capital police had all of the sources to perform their duties professionally but when we come to see a large number of murder cases, still to be resolved; it is perceived that the police did not bother to tracing out such cases as being low profile.

Same is the case with a woman, wife of Muhammad Ejaz, a senior official in PTCL, Industrial area building, who was brutally killed by unknown people, while she was sitting in her flat situated in I-9/3 a year back, in the jurisdiction of Industrial area police station. Even after the passage of more than a year, capital police could not solve the mystery of this murder.

The family members of deceased have appealed several times, to police high ups to find his killer and take serious action against him. Despite passage of nine months, capital territory police has failed to trace and arrest the murder.

The heinous crime was committed by some unknown criminals in on November 1, Mohammad Ismail, Islamabad bureau chief for the independent news agency, Pakistan Press International (PPI), was found dead near his home in Islamabad. He had been hit on the head with a hard blunt object, sources said. In addition, in Ismail's case, the motive for his killing remains unknown and police have made no arrest in connection with his case Family members of the deceased, based in Attock said that the high ups of Islamabad police are sitting tight on this issue and no progress has been made to trace and arrest the murderer despite lodging FIR. The motive behind the murder is still a mystery, which the police have failed to solve they said.
